In all places of Scripture, which speaks of the bread of the Eucharist, the bread is called in Greek - artos, which means that white bread has risen to leaven. We know that in apostolic times, that is, from the very beginning of its establishment, the Eucharist was accomplished in the year-round, weekly, when the Jewish unleavened bread is not made ready, so the Eucharist was accomplished even in the Judeo-Christian communities of leavened bread. Especially this applies to communities of Christians from the Gentiles, which was completely alien to the law of unleavened bread. Moreover, in the early Christian Church for the sacrament of the Eucharist the substance was used from the offerings of the people who brought to the temple from their houses generally leavened bread.

Artos

Artos - leavened bread, sanctified Easter by aspecial prayer. On the first day of Easter artos is brought to the altar, and relies on the altar in a special vessel, called «panagiar». On the same day of his consecration is with the reading of prescribed prayers and the sprinkling of holy water.

However, there are a further refinement in the supplementary breviary, - «Priest can shatter artos also at the liturgy of prayer before the Ambo and give believers instead antidor. Artos should not be stored all year for any superstition». In all of Bright week - artos is a symbol of the risen Christ.

A cross is sketched on artos, crowned with thorns, as a sign of Christ's victory over death, or the image of the Resurrection, but not the crucified Christ - as a sign of Christ's victory over death.

Artos sanctified with a special prayer, sprinkling by holy water and burning incense on the first day of Holy Easter liturgy in the following prayer before the Ambo. It is placed on the table at solea against the rsar's gate. After the incense around the table with artos priest reads a special prayer, after which three times artos sprinkles by holy water with the words «blessed and sanctified by the sprinkling of holy water this artos in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen».
