Power, Religion and Democracy (MT)

Christianity proclaimed the enduring value of human personality, power and religionthe human soul. The human soul is created by God the Father, redeemed by God the Son and the Holy Spirit constantly updated, is immortal, free, unique. It is for this reason it is most valuable to the Creator. If it is so precious to God, then all the more important it is to be among the people. Hence the principle of universal love and respect in a Christian society where human rights are its foundation.

God, by adopting a political system which has delegated His authority. He did not give the State an autonomous right to be above the law. Reporting to the State, we are subject not to individuals, heads of state apparatus. We submit to authority, which has received authority from God, who commanded her to respect and maintain the natural principles of freedom and justice.

Residents, especially Western countries, diminishing the value today of its christian heritage, they should understand: if it were not for the teachings of Christ, they would not have the freedoms they enjoy today, including the opportunity to discredit the very source of these freedoms, that is christianity. Of course, the latter is bad, but we should not forget that for all the good and bad, each has a mandatory responsibility, including the society as a whole.

The rule of law is possible only if the civil authorities are able to recognize the hierarchical domination of the higher laws of God over the state law. God's law is perfect, as perfect and His wisdom, power is human sin and is amazed driven by the desires of the flesh. They may be slaves of sin, disobedient to God, and chooses sinners into the power of sin and obey their decisions themselves fall into the slavery of sin.

Thus, the establishment of power is the cause of God, but that power comes perverse people, it depends on the depravity of the people who elected them.

St. Thomas believed that if the rule of law based on God's justice, "law" which prescribes the murder or perjury may not be legitimate, because the man has a moral right to disobey unjust demands. Rulers of life giving unjust laws lose their right to power and become mere tyrants. The word "tyranny" comes from the Greek "secular government" and refers to the primacy of human will, not law.

On the nature of power Metropolitan John wrote: "Christianity recognizes one source of power - God. But the single source of power involves two of its kind. First - is the power of god-pleasing, being in accordance with the Law of God, which is legitimate. The purpose of such a government is promoting ... attempts to bring the life of the people ... to ... promote the ideal of the Gospel salvation of souls ... But there in the world and a different power. Tempting Christ the Savior domination over the world, Satan has enticed him, saying: "You give power over all these kingdoms and their glory, because she betrayed me" (Lk.4:6). This calamity God of power, for reasons known only to him, - is unlawful and destructive for the people, wholly directed to the spiritual ruin under her people. No matter how perfect was its legal character, in terms of human rights, for the Christian, the solution will never be internally binding ". Only in this sense can understand that all power is from God.

In the world, there are certain laws of spiritual life set by the Lord, and neglect them no less dangerous than the disdain of the laws of nature. Faith and piety are the basis of success of public state development, the most solid and unshakable, because they attract the blessing of God, and where there is a blessing, there is success.

Man, it appears that lack of faith or transgression only destroys the person, but in fact it harms the whole society. That is why at all a duty to be faithful and pious, not only for ourselves but for the sake of integrity and firmness of the family, the entire country, all mankind.

In christian terminology, the word - the peace, has four values:

  • 1. The universe created by God;
  • 2. Good peace in the human soul;
  • 3. Lack of hostility between people, nations or states;
  • 4. Power of sin on earth, human sinfulness.

Real theocracy - dominion of God in the life of the people only existed in the Old Testament to the emergence of imperial authority. Lord, when it was brought forth prophets, judges, leaders of the people, and in this sense, directly supervised the life of Israel. During the prophet Samuel in the Israeli people need to have developed a tsar, just as they had the neighboring peoples. The Lord said to Samuel, to fulfill the desire of the people and the first tsar was put Saul from the tribe of Benjamin, he was anointed tsar prophet Samuel, but from the moment a theocracy in its pure form has disappeared forever.

The purpose of the existence of peoples and nations expressed the Apostle Paul in his speech to the Areopagus in Athens: From one blood God made all men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, that they were looking for God, he will feel after him and find him although he is not far from each one of us (Act.17:26-27).

Basic Law, which establishes the state described in Scripture. After the Flood, when humanity began to multiply and spread along the ground, God spoke the law: who will shed the blood of man, his blood be shed by the hand of man: for man was created in God's image (Byt.9:6). Consequently, the existence of law in the state based on divine possession and the rulers, the authority relies on divine authority.

Scripture is very clear evidence of the origin of state power is not the bottom, not by the will of the people, but only from above, from God. In the Old Testament, the Lord proclaimed: "By me kings reign and princes decree justice. Me princes and nobles, and all judges of the earth" (Pritch.8:15.16). In the New Testament, Jesus Christ said to Pilate: You would not have power over me if it were given thee from Above (Ioan.11:19). The Apostle Paul teaches: there is no authority except from God, as existing power by God. Wherefore God resists the authorities resists setting (Rim.13:1.2). Even in countries where leaders are elected by the people, the power of the state not from the people, though outwardly looks that way and not otherwise. If the people elect local authorities, this does not mean that it is the source of power. As in the first and the second case - a source of power is the only God. In spiritual terms, but in real life - people do not have precedence in relation to the rulers and can not deliver or remove rulers.

It is a hereditary monarchy clearly expresses the idea of divine origin; any other power is a purely human invention. However, even a human invention, when the people elect the governor, the source still remains a God (as the calamity of God), so for her to be treated as well as to the power of God. Why hereditary monarchy is the idea of divine origin? Because the monarchy is a form of government in which God gives Autocrat of all power, making it a truly autocratic, and he, in turn, aware of this, shares received by the sacred power of his subjects. The source of the same universal power is always the will of the Creator. And the more consistently and more completely this power will follow the Providence, the more powerful it will be, and so become Prosperous life entrusted to this authority. Of course, by today's notions, it is archaic, but it does not mean that our concepts are correct.

Authority should be careful about the judgments of other of their subordinates, and when you notice the lies and slander in their words, must immediately denounce and stop them, and innocent suffering on them to protect and soothe.

Society is built on the hierarchical principle of mutual subordination and abuse of this principle is the theft and plunder. Authorities older should not ignore the personality of young, but should bear in mind his favor; otherwise it turns into a kind of permanent press.

Between Church and State, there is an ontological difference: the state decides on matters relating only to the earthly life, and the Church teaches man for eternity. The government should not interfere in the internal life of the Church and the Church should not assume the functions of government. The Church teaches the human personality, reveals to him the Christian ideal of morality, and on the basis of these concepts, people make decisions in public life. In this regard, the Church stands above politics and sociology, but not directly interferes in them. If all this is a brief outline, the duty of the Church to prepare people for life in paradise, and the State's duty - to do everything to make life on earth turned into hell.

Man, as a member state has its own civil responsibilities, which must perform if they do not conflict with his conscience as well as spiritual - moral being created for eternal life, he must subordinate them the commandments given in Scripture.

Church in a spiritual sense, much higher than any notion: the state or nation, so the Church should serve the state, but rather the state and people should serve God and His Church. That the Church in its teachings designed to judge the world, but many of the liberal forces under freedom means freedom from the commandments of God, but under democratization - build a society out of Christian values.

Genuine democracy is only where the state protects all religious freedom and human rights. If the religious freedoms in the country do not, then this state is not democratic, not legal, and democracy in such a state is replaced by ideology.

Ideology - a replacement of religion to civil society, in which it becomes a major factor in shaping personality. It has created myths shape the man in the image and likeness of ideological formulas. Most ideological myths are being introduced into our heads with a pointing device through the media and education system. The victim loses the possibility of manipulation to choose rationally, because it desires and aspirations are programmed externally. Any ideology forms the corresponding world of man and society, but does not define the culture of his intellect, so the internal system of values quite different.

For easy manipulation of society, to put ideology concrete goals or objectives:

  • or seek to restrict human freedom;
  • either to minimize or even ignore the moral principle (liberal secularism).

To overcome the crisis of ideology, we can only return to that ideology is an attempt to replace - a religious worldview. The same applies to the modern mass culture or pop culture, which also represents a kind of surrogate world - certainly more primitive than ideology.

Orthodoxy is not a formal religion of a state and not a state religion, a religion of the heart and life of every individual. If the prayer of the Church authorities referred to the head of state, this does not mean that the Church prays for a specific individual, she prays to the very principle of power necessary for the existence of any social formation. Although not ruled out the prayer and the identity of the head of state, but such highly spiritual leaders of the country not long ago gave birth to our land.

In a truly christian state, three things are certainly not allowed:

  • wars of conquest;
  • civil and economic slavery;
  • the death penalty.

For the cooperation of the State and the Church, it is necessary that the following four areas are open:

  • public education system (subject to voluntariness);
  • scope of the public media;
  • program of restoration and preservation of monuments of church culture;
  • scope of social service (Institute of Church chaplains in the army, prisons, hospitals, boarding schools).

Christianity is valued and appreciated every human soul above the state, culture and the whole world, because both the state and culture for the sake of man, not man for the sake of the state and culture. Man creates the state and culture not as the ultimate goal of life, as well as an auxiliary means to achieve spiritual and moral goals.

Christianity - requires of man, that he spoke the truth, was just even with respect to their opponents, while the policy and management principle divides the world into friends and foes.

A special responsibility rests on those who are entrusted with power over the country, regions and localities. They are responsible for the moral health of society.

Democracy is a moral and spiritual point of view may be different. Democracy can serve most people, it is true to a greater extent - in theory, but can serve only a group of rulers, so you need to assess not a form of government, and its result. If ordinary people with this form of government is better, fairer and freer, it is such and should be supported, but when seeking some form of government from a principle rather than for a man, he will always evil and wrong, why democracy is not important, as such, but deeds of politicians and rulers.

In a democracy under the source of power will of course always one way or another (sometimes very small) part of the people, who fancies himself quite self-willed and self-sufficient. None of what providential will of the Almighty, none of the Democrats and does not want to think.

Man flattering to imagine themselves in a voluntary and democracy for it now becomes an idol. In reality, democracy is a manifestation of primal distortion of human nature. This erosion of the cover the full scope of life, and in politics, it turns out just outside the deification of democracy, when the beer is appropriate for democrats, but people get only foam.

Berdyaev wrote that: "Democracy is indifferent to good and evil. It - tolerant because indifferent because lost faith in the truth ... Democracy is an extreme relativism, the denial of the absolute. Democracy does not know the truth, and therefore it is the disclosure of the truth by majority vote. Acceptance of authority, the adoration of everyone's vote is only possible with disbelief in the truth and the ignorance of the truth ... freedom-loving democracy, but this love of freedom does not arise out of respect for the human spirit and human identity, it is - of freedom indifferent to the truth ... ". The fact that democracy does not know and does not want to know the truth, sometimes leads to violent results. The most egregious example is provided for failure to protect democracy before the triumph of evil is the crucifixion of Christ the Savior, who was put to death, namely, as a result of the democratic vote of the Jerusalem crowd.

Democracy is by definition the only power of the people, but people can not directly exercise power, but only through their representatives. Once in power, these representatives of the people unfortunately are more concerned about themselves than about the people. Consequently, democracy is the power of the people and the people. Elected representatives, having received authority from the people, often tricked good promise, always the same people more or less cheating. Democracy has never been the power of the people if only because the only resort to numerical criteria, carrying himself. Very often, one or another representative came to power, with too little preponderance of votes cast, with the number of voters, rather than the total population.
